Before You Reach Out — What to Consider

Mural work is a significant undertaking for both the artist and the client. The following will help you come to that first conversation prepared.

Location and Surface Indoor murals can be completed year round. Outdoor murals in Kentucky are best scheduled between late April and early October when temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees and the risk of rain, humidity, and frost is manageable. Exterior walls must be structurally sound, properly primed, and free of significant cracks or moisture damage before paint is applied. Surface preparation is the client's responsibility unless otherwise negotiated.

Size Mural pricing is based primarily on square footage. Before reaching out, measure the wall or space you have in mind and note the height and width. Knowing your dimensions ahead of time allows for a more accurate quote and helps determine the scope of the project from the first conversation.

Height and Access Murals that extend above ten feet require scaffolding or a lift. For outdoor projects especially, this is a significant logistical and cost consideration. The client is responsible for arranging and funding access equipment unless otherwise agreed upon in the project contract. Please consider ceiling height for indoor projects and building height for outdoor work when planning your inquiry.

Permits and Zoning Outdoor murals on commercial buildings, public facing walls, or properties in historic districts may require permits from your local city or county zoning office. It is the client's responsibility to secure any necessary permits before work begins. Some municipalities also require traffic control plans or street blockage permits if scaffolding or equipment extends into a public right of way. Please research your local requirements before reaching out.

Timeline Mural projects require planning time for design approval, surface preparation, scheduling, and production. Most indoor murals require one to three weeks of active painting time depending on size and complexity. Outdoor murals may take longer due to weather variables. A signed contract and deposit are required before any design work begins. Rush timelines are not available.

Design Every mural begins with a design consultation and a scaled rendering for client approval before a single brushstroke goes on the wall. Revisions to the approved design once painting has begun may incur additional fees.

Pricing

Indoor mural commissions begin at $5,000. Outdoor mural commissions begin at $10,000. Final pricing is determined by square footage, complexity, subject matter, travel requirements, and access needs. A detailed quote is provided after the initial consultation.

​

A non-refundable deposit of fifty percent is required to reserve your place on the commission schedule. The remaining balance is due upon project completion.
